After completing his formal training in 1979, he continued full-time at the Rochester Zen Center until leaving for an extended pilgrimage in 1981. During his pilgrimage, he lived in Japan for a year and a half, training under Harada Tangen Roshi. In 1981 he was named Dharma Heir to Roshi Kapleau.
