Note: George Bowman has been with Providence Zen Center since its inception and is now living at Cambridge Zen Center. He studied anthropology and biology at Brown University, and attended Duke University on a Ph. D. program in anthropology of religion in 1969, until he left to study Zen fulltime. He has studied extensively with other Zen Masters living in America, and led the first three Winter Kyol Che retreats at Providence Zen Center. A longtime runner, he has done extensive racing, including a number of marathons. George is a skilled carpenter and has worked on all the major Providence Zen Center building projects. He was ordained a Bodhisattva monk in 1982. The following excerpts are from a retreat journal kept by Master Dharma Teacher George Bowman during the winter of 1983-84. We published other portions, under the title "Journal of a Winter Solo", in the Spring 1984 issue of Primary Point

Note: A Zen kong-an is a paradoxical story or statement used to test the clarity of a student's mind. Zen Master Seung Sahn has selected a representative group of kong-ans that he refers to as the "Ten Gates." He says that if you can answer these ten, then you can answer any other kong-an. The Fifth Gate, the famous "Hyang Eom's Up a Tree," is one of the most graphic illustrations of a kong-an. It is a "Kyung Chul Mun" type of kong-an, meaning "everything is stopped." We asked teachers in the Kwan Um School of Zen to comment on this kong-an. Their responses follow; a history of the kong-an itself is in the first commentary

Note: The following exchange is from a lively panel discussion August 2nd during the School Congress of the Kwan Um Zen, between Zen Master Seuhg Sahn, who is addressed as "Soen Sa Nim" by his students, his six American Master Dharma Teachers, and students in the audience, There was a preliminary discussion of why most of the Kwan Um School of Zen chants are in Korean and not chanted in English. Soen Sa Nim pointed out that having a universal language for the chanting makes it possible to have a unified style within the School, which now has groups in seven countries outside North America. Master Dharma Teacher Richard Shrobe moderated the discussion
